Avoca is Ireland’s oldest working woollen mill, founded in 1723 in Avoca Village, County Wicklow. Established as a co-operative by local farmers, the mill originally provided spinning, dyeing, and weaving services for the community, producing blankets and clothing for local miners. The company’s history is marked by innovation, such as the adoption of the flying shuttle loom in the 18th century, and by the creative influence of the Wynne sisters in the early 20th century, who revitalized the mill with vibrant colors and new weaving patterns inspired by the Irish landscape.
Throughout the 20th century, Avoca expanded its reach internationally, supplying couture houses and royalty, but also faced periods of decline. The business was revived in the 1970s by Donald and Hilary Pratt, who restored the mill and diversified the brand into retail, food, and lifestyle offerings. Today, Avoca operates 13 locations across Ireland, featuring not only textiles and clothing but also cafés, food markets, ceramics, and gardens, while still weaving its iconic throws in the original mill. The company remains committed to its heritage, craftsmanship, and community, celebrating 300 years of continuous operation in 2023.
Avoca’s design philosophy centers on honoring tradition while embracing creativity and innovation. The brand is renowned for its use of color, intricate weaving techniques, and high-quality natural materials. Avoca’s collections are inspired by the Irish landscape and heritage, blending classic craftsmanship with contemporary design. The company values sustainability, local production, and the passing down of skills through generations, ensuring each product is both beautiful and meaningful
